Butterfly valves, gate valves, and ball valves are among the most commonly used pipeline valves. They differ in appearance and function.

I. Differences between Butterfly Valves and Gate Valves:

1. Different Definitions: Gate valves are common on/off valves, while butterfly valves are valves where the closing element is a disc that rotates around a valve shaft to open and close. They are mainly used for pipeline shut-off and throttling.

2. Different Operating Mechanisms: Gate valves are straight-stroke valves, meaning the valve stem drives the valve plate to move vertically up and down to open and close the valve. Gate valves have low flow resistance and slow opening and closing speeds. Butterfly valves are angle-stroke valves, where the valve plate rotates 90° around the valve shaft to open and close the valve. Butterfly valves open and close very quickly.

3. Different Functions and Applications: Gate valves have low flow resistance and good sealing performance, but the seal is easily damaged if the valve plate is not fully opened or closed. Therefore, they are mostly used for shutting off piping where strict sealing is required and frequent opening and closing is not necessary. Butterfly valves not only have a shut-off function but also a regulating function. Butterfly valves open and close quickly and can be opened and closed frequently, making them particularly suitable for applications requiring rapid opening, closing, or shut-off. The main difference between gate valves and butterfly valves is that gate valves lack a regulating function, while butterfly valves do.

4. Gate valves and butterfly valves differ in price. Electric butterfly valves are cheaper, while electric gate valves are more expensive. Butterfly valves have larger diameters, while gate valves are relatively less expensive.

II. The difference between ball valves and butterfly valves: The difference between butterfly valves and ball valves is that butterfly valves use a plate for opening and closing, while ball valves use a ball.

The valve plate of a butterfly valve and the valve core of a ball valve rotate around their own axis. The sealing surface of a ball valve is a spherical surface. Simply put, one uses a ball to block the valve, and the other uses a leaf to block it.
